“Wookie,” Daniel D. Brown, 2016, Pastel Pencil

This is “Wookie,” a Linneaus’s Two-Toed Sloth that lives at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, PA. If you’ve been there, you’ve probably seen him chilling with the toucans.
It’s a 10″x8″ drawing made with Gioconda Pastel Pencils.

See a timelapse of its creation below.

“Masked,” Daniel D. Brown, 2016, Digital

Thanks to the completion of a recent commission, I was able to get an incredibly usedul new tool: the Intuos Creative Stylus 2. I used it to draw this raccoon in the Procreate app (my absolute favorite art app) on my old iPad Air. This took about a week to draw (mostly on the bus and in the hours before bed. You can see a timelapse (condensed to a minute) below.

Prints are available on the Laughing Mantis Studio Etsy shop.

“Ember,” Daniel D. Brown, 2016, Pastel Pencil

“Ember”
14″ x 11″ Pastel Pencil on PastelMat

This is a drawing of the mythical Phoenix, engulfed in flames after resurrection. It is based on an actual photograph I took at the San Diego Zoo. Yes, believe it or not, they have a Phoenix there, although it is of the white ecotype, is not flaming, and is erroneously labeled as a “Secretary Bird”.

Original is SOLD

“Red-Whiskered Bulbul in Mauritius,” Daniel D. Brown, 2016, Pastel Pencil

My wife and I eloped to South Africa and Mauritius in 2014. One of the most common birds we saw in Mauritius was the red-whiskered bulbul. This particular bird was begging my wife for scraps of an apple she was eating.

“Yoga Bird Pants,” Daniel D. Brown, 2015, Digital

My wife is a part time yoga instructor, so for Christmas this year I designed a pair of avian-themed yoga pants (with yoga “bird” poses included), using Adobe Illustrator. I had them printed through Print All Over Me and I have made my design available for others if you wish to purchase them for yourself. They turned out really nice.

“Benito the Hyacinth Macaw,” Daniel D. Brown, 2015, Pastel Pencil

I really got a great bunch of photographs from my most recent trip to the National Aviary with my wife. Needless to say, they have been a huge inspiration in my pastel drawings. This is “Benito” the Hyacinth macaw that lives at the Aviary. He is almost ALWAYS putting on a show when I visit, hanging upside down, stretching his wings, making a racket, or grooming the other macaw.

This piece is 11×14”.
